Week 23-24 - March 2nd, 2019

We have been focusing most of our time these past couple of weeks on writing in 1B.  We had a some really cool projects that had the students literally vibrating with excitement.  One of their favourites was our Hidden Snowman Project.  I gave the students some time to design their very own snowman.  I didn't give them many instructions just that their snowman had to be unique and had to have some details.  They did so awesome with this.  Some snowmen had earrings, skirts, infinity stones, unique buttons, and the list goes on.  Next, they had to come up with 4 clues that described their snowman.  I told them that I was going to hide their snowmen around the school and that they had to give their classmates very detailed clues to help them be to able to identify the correct snowman.  They also had to focus extremely hard on their writing making sure another grade 1 student could read it, decode their describing words and follow the instructions.  They did such an amazing job, check them out here!

And Friday the search was on!  Students went around the school in partners with their clue sheet and iPad.  Once they found the correct snowman they took a picture of it and headed back to class for a new clue sheet!  So much fun!!!

We also wrote a How to Guide on building a snowman.  They were writing to someone who had never once built a snowman in their life, so they had to give step by step instructions.  We also started an Author's Chair time where students can read us their writing.  This has been a huge motivation for some of them. I have a couple of videos of students reading their writing in the February Photo Tab.

We also did a fun writing project around Pink Shirt Day.  Students were asked a variety of questions regarding kindness.  What does kindness look like? What does a kind friend do? What does the phrase "Throw kindness like confetti" mean? How are you kind? How can you be kind at home, at school and in the community.  After they took some time to answer those questions they picked their favourite saying and designed a pink shirt of their own.  They loved this project!

In Science we finished up our senses unit this week with making our senses bear!  Isn't he cute??

In Math we are adding like crazy!  We have learned how to count on, where students look at the math equation, choose the highest number and then count on to find the sum.  They like this because it helps them become very quick at solving the equations.   We did a lot of addition using a number line to help!  They love dabbling with high numbers so the number line helps keep them on track.

In class, because their is such a range of abilities when it comes to math skills, I like to introduce new math games.  This allows me to have some students working on numbers to 10 while other students are working on numbers to 20.  We learned Addition Horse Race and Addition Face Off this week, next week we will be learning a few more!

In Social Studies we are spending a lot of time learning about the community of Devon.  We finished off our community scrapbook project and started with our very own Town of Devon Map.  We designed a map key, and students all worked to design different parts of Devon that really needed to be on the map.

Congrats go out to Ramsay and Qynn for receiving student of the week over the last two weeks.  Ramsay is a quiet Grade 1 student who works hard and gives it his best effort every time!

I can always count on Qynn to help a friend or a teacher.  She is a dedicated student who is always on task and working hard.  Qynn always surprises me with the words she knows!

We celebrated Bently's 7th Birthday last week too!  1B loves Bently!

A couple of the girls from our class made the Devon Dispatch this week!
