Week 33- 34, May 17th 2019

We have been working so hard in 1B.  I just love this time of year!  Everyone has made so much progress, I can't describe how happy I am to see everyone doing so well.  1B can do so much on their own and I love seeing how confident they are becoming.  They are so excited to figure things out on their own, and even more excited to show me what they know!  I LOVE GRADE 1!

In Science, we have really been focusing on the needs of plants and animals.  For plants, we planted some seeds with our Grade 4 buddies, and two students are taking turns going to the Grade 4 room every day to take care of them.  On a weekly basis we are tracking our plants growth and documenting our observations in a seed journal.  There are a few plants that haven't sprouted yet, but we have put them in a small green house to help nurse them back to health.

In these pictures students were showing me that they knew the 4 parts of a plant and were describing what each part does to help with a plant's survival.

For the needs of animals, I am sure you have heard about our SuperWorms.  These little creatures have become our class pets, and to look after them we really needed to dive right into the needs of animals for survival.  We researched, as a class, what Superworms need to survive, and we found out that they like to make a bed out of soil and oatmeal, and that they eat fruits and vegetables.  These little creatures are also nocturnal and they are most comfortable digging tunnels and sleep mostly throughout the day unless they are disturbed by tiny humans!  Another interesting thing about Superworms is that they get their water from the foods they eat, so they don't need a separate source of water.  Superworms also turn to beetles, so we are waiting patiently to see if any of these transformations occur.

We compared superworms to gummy worms too when we were distinguishing between living and non living things.

In writing we have been doing a few lessons from our Empowering Writers Workbook.  This week we worked on adding details to completing a certain task.  Students were each given a First, Next, and Last Card and had to expand on the task giving more details.

Check them out here!

After this task we read "Hey little Ant" which tells a story about a child who has two choices when he sees an Ant on the street, he can squash it with his foot, or he can leave it be and watch where he goes....Students got to write about what they would do if they were that child..

In Math, we are moving right along with subtraction, moving onto higher numbers and playing some pretty fun games.  I hope to put together a list of math games for you to have at home sometime soon.  It is such a great way to practice getting more fluent with basic math facts!

Our Bandaid Poems were a fun project that we completed last week.  Students had to come up with all the ways they can get hurt, or all the reasons they need a bandaid.  Grade 1 students need bandaids for quite a few reasons so this was a very fun project for them!  The poems are called a list poem, where they simply list all the reasons, and the poems title is OUCH!

We had the Devon Bike Association in for Helmet Checks, and the Lion's Club came in again this week to teach us all about the Canadian Flag.

We added to our Science Journal all the things we learned about Spring!

We have been practicing sight words with some new fun ways.  This week their favourite activity was hidden words.  They use a white crayon to write the sight words they are practicing all over the sheet, and then they find a partner with a marker who tries to find the word, uncover the word and read it!

We celebrated a Birthday with Cecil this week!

And Ryan was our 1B Student of the Week!

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!

We will share with you our Plant Walk Project in a couple weeks when we finish all 4 of our walks, students are working on a book of pictures and observations and will get to bring it home once it is complete.
