Welcome to 1B - 2019

Hi There,

If you are new to Blogs at Robina Baker, here is a bit of information to help you get started!

If you would like to be notified of each blog post, on the left hand side of the screen there is a "follow by email link".  Just put the email you would like to be notified by and Blogger will send you a notification each time, they only send notifications once in 24 hrs so sometimes there will be a delay. Don't worry, I'll send out an e-mail notifications myself about the latest blog updates in case you forget to sign up.

On the first day of school I will send home an information sheet for you to fill out so I have your most up-to-date contact information and I will add you all to my email list then.  I will use email for any daily communication and will try to update the blog weekly with any pictures or curriculum updates. Please always make sure I have your most up-to-date email address.  Please also feel free to share our Blog with any family members who might be interested in learning about what your child is doing at school.

On our blog, I will include calendar updates, both from the whole RBES school, and from our class. You can click on the calendar pages and sync it to your own Google Calendar app, if you use it.  I will also add photos throughout the month.  Please feel free to click and save photos of your child.

The home page is where I will post all updated information.  I will try to include as many curriculum updates as possible.  I will be using this blog as an update for parents, so you can hear what topics and outcomes we will be learning about each week.  Also when you are talking to your children about their days you will know some specific information about what we might be learning. We will also be using the Blog in class, sometimes students will help me decide on which information to share with you and also help me pick out which pictures to use.

September is about learning routines and building relationships.  We will be touring the school, learning how to line up, how to get safely to and from the bathroom, and how to participate in class.

In Language Arts, we will be doing some review and assessments of the upper and lower case letters and sounds.  Each student will be introduced to the class with the "All about ME!" bags coming home during the first week of school. Students will send 4-6 items that fit into a paper bag to show the class.  This helps us get to know each other.  With these activities, we will interview the students, ask questions, write sentences and focus on each child's names.  Our class names will be the start of our word wall.  By doing one classmate a day the students will get very familiar with common words in sentences, and we will make a class book for the students to share with you at home.  We will also be taking a look at the difference between fiction and non fiction books. Also in Language Arts we will be starting our "Read to Self" portion of the Daily 5.  Students will learn how to pick the proper books ("Good Fit Books") and we will practice reading alone and building our stamina.

Each week we will also be doing a word sort.  In September we will be focusing on sorting words according to the beginning consonants  We will sort these words differently everyday and then on Friday they will be sent home for you to keep and practice if needed.

We will also be doing some daily printing practice in September.

In Math we will be starting our patterns unit, and talking about numbers 1-10.  We will be making some class posters about all the ways we can show a number: tally marks, number lines, dice, written word, unit cubes...I'm sure the students will show me other ways that I haven't thought of, too!

In Science we will be talking about Fall and start our Creating and Mixing colors unit.

Social Studies in September will be learning about our classroom and school community.

Welcome to 1B!

‘Twas the Night Before School Started' -Author Unknown

‘Twas the night before school started, when all through the town, the parents were cheering. It was a riotous sound! By eight, kids were washed and tucked into bed... When memories of homework Filled them with dread.
New pencils, new folders, new notebooks, too! New teachers, new friends... Their anxiety grew! The parents just giggled when they learned of this fright and shouted upstairs— “Go to bed! It’s a School night!”

Last Week!

We had a great last week of school.  It was a sad good bye for some but I know everyone is ready for a well deserved break!

We made sure to have lots of fun this week.  My goal as a Grade 1 Teacher is not to have top readers, writers and mathematicians but to get students excited about learning and coming to school. I think when they love coming to school those skills will surely come, and I seen a tremendous amount of growth in each and every one of my students.  I do hope that everyone one of your children enjoyed coming to school more days than they complained!

Check out the fun we had this week!

June in Grade 1 is SO MUCH FUN!!!

We are learning about fiction and non fiction books.  The students made two different book covers this month, one was a narrative book, which the students had to come up with a title, and tell me a little bit about the story they would write about their research animal, and the other was an expository book which was about that same animal but a book filled with facts and true information.  They loved designing these books.  It was a great project to do along with our research project.
Math is all about measuring right now, we are measuring everything you can imagine.  We are also using all kinds of measuring tools.  Students are learning how to measure properly and make a proper estimate.  We also learned how to weigh objects and how to compare weights of objects.

Bike Rodeo was so much fun!

Thank you for all the parent support on our Antique museum and Grandparent Interview.  We had some very cool items brought in!  A report card, a coffee grinder, an old bottle and jar, a record and drill, a spoon collection, a bell, a glass doll, a deed to a farm that is 100 years old... it was very cool!

I'm sure you have heard about our research project.  I do have to say that so far, this was by far my favourite project.  Students picked their own animal, categorized their animal, found research information about their animal and then began the process of researching.  After all that was done, they designed their animal out of clay, and got the chance to design their habitat.  They had pretty important steps to follow in their habitat design, they needed to make sure their animal could survive there.  Ensuring a place to get food, water, air and shelter.  They blew me away with their designs.  They will come home early this week.  The research papers will be kept in their memory books.

We used some new art tools this week to design this beautiful sunset!

The students loved sharing their animal research project and habitat with a couple of other classes in the school.
Capacity Centres - students participated in 6 centres learning about capacity, they counted and measured a variety of objects in different sizes of containers!  They also learned how to make good estimates!  This was a fun afternoon!

Congrats to Kailynn for being this weeks Student of the WEEK!

Bring your pet to school was a big hit, we have a few more visitors coming next week!

To celebrate National Indigenous People's Day we were lucky enough to have some dancers and drummers into our school on Monday, and to head out to the International Airport for an amazing performance.  The students loved it!  I'm sure Mrs. K will have much better pictures than I do in the blog, but here are a few.

Our John Walter Museum trip turned out to have great weather and we learned a bit more about the past there.  Students participated in 4 centres, making a wax candle, butter, scones and building a log cabin.  They also heard the story of John Walter and his family arriving to Canada and pioneering some very new ways for Edmonton.

We had another student of the week this week too, with Layton!

We have been working on a few other things too.  For more pictures please check out the June Photo Link.
