Last Week!

We had a great last week of school.  It was a sad good bye for some but I know everyone is ready for a well deserved break!

We made sure to have lots of fun this week.  My goal as a Grade 1 Teacher is not to have top readers, writers and mathematicians but to get students excited about learning and coming to school. I think when they love coming to school those skills will surely come, and I seen a tremendous amount of growth in each and every one of my students.  I do hope that everyone one of your children enjoyed coming to school more days than they complained!

Check out the fun we had this week!

June in Grade 1 is SO MUCH FUN!!!

We are learning about fiction and non fiction books.  The students made two different book covers this month, one was a narrative book, which the students had to come up with a title, and tell me a little bit about the story they would write about their research animal, and the other was an expository book which was about that same animal but a book filled with facts and true information.  They loved designing these books.  It was a great project to do along with our research project.
Math is all about measuring right now, we are measuring everything you can imagine.  We are also using all kinds of measuring tools.  Students are learning how to measure properly and make a proper estimate.  We also learned how to weigh objects and how to compare weights of objects.

Bike Rodeo was so much fun!

Thank you for all the parent support on our Antique museum and Grandparent Interview.  We had some very cool items brought in!  A report card, a coffee grinder, an old bottle and jar, a record and drill, a spoon collection, a bell, a glass doll, a deed to a farm that is 100 years old... it was very cool!

I'm sure you have heard about our research project.  I do have to say that so far, this was by far my favourite project.  Students picked their own animal, categorized their animal, found research information about their animal and then began the process of researching.  After all that was done, they designed their animal out of clay, and got the chance to design their habitat.  They had pretty important steps to follow in their habitat design, they needed to make sure their animal could survive there.  Ensuring a place to get food, water, air and shelter.  They blew me away with their designs.  They will come home early this week.  The research papers will be kept in their memory books.

We used some new art tools this week to design this beautiful sunset!

The students loved sharing their animal research project and habitat with a couple of other classes in the school.
Capacity Centres - students participated in 6 centres learning about capacity, they counted and measured a variety of objects in different sizes of containers!  They also learned how to make good estimates!  This was a fun afternoon!

Congrats to Kailynn for being this weeks Student of the WEEK!

Bring your pet to school was a big hit, we have a few more visitors coming next week!

To celebrate National Indigenous People's Day we were lucky enough to have some dancers and drummers into our school on Monday, and to head out to the International Airport for an amazing performance.  The students loved it!  I'm sure Mrs. K will have much better pictures than I do in the blog, but here are a few.

Our John Walter Museum trip turned out to have great weather and we learned a bit more about the past there.  Students participated in 4 centres, making a wax candle, butter, scones and building a log cabin.  They also heard the story of John Walter and his family arriving to Canada and pioneering some very new ways for Edmonton.

We had another student of the week this week too, with Layton!

We have been working on a few other things too.  For more pictures please check out the June Photo Link.
