Week 22- February 18th, 2019

WOW, what a week!  We celebrated, both Valentines Day and the 100th day of school!  We had way too much fun!  The 100th day shirts were awesome!  Thank you parents for helping! There were way too many pictures to put into one blog post so please check out the February Photo Tab!

In Math this week we focused on solving word problems.  Each word problem that we solve has three parts, 1) a picture, 2) a number sentence and 3) a word sentence.  We practiced this process together many times this week.  We took time to look through the word problems, find key information, think about how to solve the problem and then took the time to solve the problem together.  The students loved solving all the problems.  They are getting to be such good readers too!  They love looking for sight words in everything that we read!

In Language Arts we are practicing our spelling words daily in a variety of ways.  Mrs. Nuttall lent us her salt writing trays which were a huge hit, and we used playdough, rainbow writing and our boogie boards to practice too.

We also added two new elements to our word sort this week..1) sort and write where students first sort the pictures and then write/spell all the words in their notebook, and 2) sort and draw, where the students draw pictures of the words they sort.  They are getting so good at word sorts that soon I will be getting to use their word sort words in sentences.

In Social Studies this week we started our Community Scrapbook.  Students will take some time to learn all about the Community of Devon and the things that connect them to their community.  We started off with looking at a map of Devon, we located it within the province of Alberta and the Country of Canada.  Next we talked about our address and how we can find out address on a map.

After we located our houses on the map, we looked up our address on Google Earth.  We found out that a couple of our classmates live very close to one another, and a couple live very close to ME!  Google Earth was a big hit!

Valentine's Day was so fun!  We wrote about what "Love is..." We will be making a class book with all of their responses!  They were so good!   We also wrote down the three things we love the most.  We played Bingo, and we made Love Monsters to collect all of our Valentines Day treats.

And of course on Friday we threw one heck of a 100th day of School Party!  The shirts were awesome!!

Zero the Hero started off the morning hiding 100 Hershey Kisses around our classroom!  He is a tricky little guy, hiding them in our shoes, cubbies, mailboxes, you name it he hid it in there!!

We also took some time to see what we would look like when we are 100 years old!  They sure got a kick out of this!!

We did 100 fitness activities in Gym!

We wrote about what we would do with 100 dollars!

We spelled 100 words!

We rhymed 100 words!

We didn't quite finish our 100 picture challenge, but we will finish them up next week!
That was just the morning!

In the afternoon we did 100's day challenges where students were given different materials and asked to create what they could out of 100 of each item, lego, pennies, linking cubes, solo cups, popsicle sticks, and cheerios.  We also made our 100th day trail mix!

Since skating was cancelled all week Ryan's mom brought us a Hot Chocolate treat to help us get over all the bad news.  We have also had quite a few days of indoor recess so please keep your fingers crossed we can get outside this week.  We are all going a little stir crazy!

And Congratulations goes out to Katelyn this week for being 1B's student of the week.  Katelyn is such a fun girl!  She is game to try anything and lately has been working so hard on her writing and reading!  Katelyn is a great speller and takes her time doing all of her activities.  Way to go Katelyn!
