Week 19 - January 27th

Here is another short and sweet blog post with a few pictures of our week!

Congrats to Ava for getting student of the week this week!  She is making significant gains in her reading and writing.  She is excited to read and I see her confidence growing each day!  Ava is a very thoughtful and kind friend who loves to help her teacher.  We love having Ava in 1B.

We have been studying the book the Mitten this week, and have done a lot of work around writing stories with it.  We learned about the beginning and end of the story, as well as all the parts in between.  The students will bring home their mittens next week and get to show you what we mean about the middle of the story.  We also learned that there are more than 100 ways to say the word "go" and when we use different words to say the word "go" it makes our writing much more interesting.

More to come on this project next week!

In math we finished off our numbers to 20 unit with a few fun activities and games around the concept of odd and even.  I will send home our game sheets next week and you can try them out at home.

In Math we also started our addition unit.  We are learning some addition strategies to begin the unit and I taught them a new game called around the world  This will help with their basic fact recognition.

In Social, we are learning about the differences between Maps and Globes.

Of course skating was a big part of our week, I appreciate everyone who came out to help, we were on the ice in record time and I really think every child made an improvement. Skating starts again Feb 11th.

As part of our Science we are learning about all the ways we can enjoy winter, so on Friday after a long week we got outside to do some snow painting!  We had a blast!

See everyone Monday!
