Week 31-32 - May 4th, 2019

It has been a jammed packed couple of weeks with so many activities happening in our classroom and school.  I apologize for the long post, but there were just too many fun activities not to share.  This week was Education Week - with the theme of "Learning as a Journey."  A couple of the Teachers at RBES planned some awesome activities.....

We enjoyed a pancake breakfast on Monday,

We wrote a couple sentences in a shared story on Tuesday.  Each class added 3-4 sentences to the story with this picture prompt.  It turned out quite cute and I am sure the Principal will share it on her blog sometimes soon!

We coloured our tiles for the whole school collaborative art project on Wednesday, as well as wore our Hats to raise awareness for Mental Health.

On Wednesday, we had a reader from the Lions Club come and share a story with us.  They also donated a book to our class library.
Thursday I was away, but the students did awesome with the sub, they worked on some subtraction practice, writing practice and reading comprehension practice.

Friday, we celebrated by participating in a whole school reading block together and had a chance to see our huge whole school art project!  We also watched a video by "Kid President" called Teachers and Students working together!  It was pretty funny, so I will try to share the link with you guys soon.

Happy Birthday to Qynn!

And Congratulations to Brookyln and Priya for getting Student of the week the last two weeks!

We finished our building things unit this week with building our houses, furniture and new toys. Students really loved this unit, and I loved how they took my challenge and made it their own.  During our building unit, students had the chance to use a variety of materials, build a variety of real life objects, build replicate objects, and do some designing on their own.  We always came back together to label our pictures and talk about what creative designs we had.  We talked about materials they could use and we also discussed the fasteners that might work too!

We started subtraction this week too.  To help the students understand what it means to take numbers away we went bowling, we started with 10 pins and took turns knocking pins over and subtracting the knocked over pins.  We had a blast and by the end, each student was able to write a subtraction equation and count the pins to figure out the answers.

In Language Arts, we have really be focusing on our writing again this week, we are writing poems, pen pal letters, and summarizing stories.  We have worked on a couple poems this week and I have been really surprised with the students writing.  We wrote a name rainbow poem where students had a list of character traits that they chose from that described themselves.  They had to pick a character trait that matched each letter in their name.  We hung these cute rainbows from our roof above each  students desk.

To work on reading comprehension this week, we read the book "Bad Seed" together as a class.  Students had to retell the story in their own words by recalling the beginning, middle and end of the story.

We have finished all of our rainbow words for this year.  I will be assessing all the students again next week and will send home a list of any words your child still needs to practice.  For the rest of the year our word work will be about making words, phonics activities and strengthening our vocabulary skills.

We did this fun art project to go along with our Duck/Bunny Writing last week.  We also used it as a little Easter gift  for our pen pals.  We talked about line and texture and about taking our time to make sure we do our best work every time!  They turned out so cute!

We also enjoyed a couple walks over the last two weeks!  One had beautiful weather, and one did NOT!  But we had fun just the same!  Thank you to Bently's mom for joining us.  This week in the river valley we focused on living and non living things.  We also took many pictures of the plants along our path so we can see how they change as we visit the valley weekly.

We also participated in the Town of Devon's reusable bag contest.  They asked the children to create a bag that might be chosen to be one of two designs that will be used on some new reusable bags that will be delivered to every home in Devon.  This was pretty motivating and exciting for my class and I think they came up with some pretty awesome ideas!

I think that is all for now!  Enjoy the rest of the weekend!  We will see you next week!
